{"id":214,"date":"2018-08-13T15:31:33","date_gmt":"2018-08-13T15:31:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/88.99.116.45\/?page_id=214"},"modified":"2021-11-01T19:04:22","modified_gmt":"2021-11-01T19:04:22","slug":"press-release-2021","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.frankmaherclassicalmusicawards.com\/index.php\/press-release-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Winner Press Release 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Stan O\u2019Beirne wins 2021 Frank Maher Classical Music Awards<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Pianist Stan O\u2019Beirne (18) a sixth-year student at Gonzaga College, Dublin has won the \u20ac5,000 top prize at the <em>2021<\/em> <em>Top Security Frank Maher Classical Music Awards, <\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>Ireland\u2019s largest such competition for secondary schools.<\/p>\n<p>Stan was one of six teen finalists at the competition night on Friday 29<sup>th<\/sup> October 2021 at the Mill Theatre in Dundrum, Dublin, at which he performed two pieces \u2013 <em>Ballade No.2 in F Major, Op38<\/em> by Frederic Chopin and <em>Moment Musicaux No.4 in E Minor<\/em> by Sergei Rachmaninoff.<\/p>\n<p>The Awards were created in 2001 by Top Security chairman Emmet O\u2019Rafferty to honour the memory of his late teacher, Fr Frank Maher, who taught music at Castleknock College in Dublin.\u00a0 Emmet said\u00a0\u201c<em> I am very pleased to welcome Stan O\u2019Beirne to our pantheon of young and talented winners. Father Frank Maher was a mentor of talent in many areas of school life, but he was especially passionate about classical music. I know that he would have been delighted and proud of all the performances we heard tonight. I want to wish Stan and our five finalists the very best of luck in wherever their talents take them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Commenting on his win, Stan said \u201c<em>I prepared so much, and I put so much emotional energy into my performance on the night, \u00a0it\u2019s just an amazing feeling to have won. Thank you again to Top Security for sponsoring this competition and I am going to put my prize money towards saving for a new piano.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em>The Awards\u2019 aim is to showcase outstanding young musical talent in Irish schools and are open to sixth year post-primary students of strings, woodwind, brass and piano. The \u20ac5,000 top prize must be used to attend a recognised place of tuition, a course of study in Ireland or abroad or on a purchase necessary for the development of their talent.<\/p>\n<p>Past winners have gone on to attend some of the world\u2019s most prominent music colleges, which includes the Juilliard School, Conservatoire Nationale Superieur de Musique et de Danse Paris, Kronberg Academy in Germany, the Royal Academy of Music in London and MUK Vienna.<\/p>\n<p>The five finalists each received a \u20ac300 bursary.\u00a0 They were <strong>Sidi Bao<\/strong> (17) Sandford Park School, Dublin (violin); <strong>Eimear Boyle<\/strong> (18), Midleton College, Cork (flute); <strong>Anna Jansson<\/strong> (18), St. Angela\u2019s College, Cork (piano); <strong>Claire O\u2019Connor<\/strong> (18),Muckross Park College Dublin (violin) and <strong>Gerry Yang<\/strong> (17) Sandford Park School (piano).<\/p>\n<p>The judging panel was Dr Gerard Gillen, emeritus professor of music at NUI Maynooth, Dr Kerry Houston, head of academic studies at TU Dublin Conservatory of Music and Drama and classical pianist Veronica McSwiney.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Gerard Gillen, chair of the judging panel, said &#8220;<em>In a hotly contested final where the standard was phenomenally high, Stan O&#8217;Beirne&#8217;s playing of two challenging works from the Romantic piano repertory stood out for\u00a0technical mastery and outstanding musical colour,\u00a0expression and insight.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Judge Veronica McSwiney is one of Ireland\u2019s most celebrated international pianists and she added, \u00a0&#8220;<em>Stan O\u2019Beirne was a very worthy winner of the Frank Maher Awards. From the very opening of his performance of the Chopin Ballade he commanded my attention. Beautiful sensitive playing and very impressive technical ability. He also got right inside the whole \u201cstory\u201d of the work with a maturity that belies his young years.
